When did “addicting” become a word?
I’ve been seeing this used around the place and thought, it’s not that much harder to use a real word. If referring to yourself you can say “addicted” if you want to use an adjective to describe something you can say “addictive”. “ing” is used as an ending to a verb but there was never a verb version of this word, you’d just say “becoming addicted”.
When I Googled “addicting” it came up with a lot of sites, particularly to do with games. When I clicked on “definition” Answers.com including ad-dict.ing in its variations of the word addict but it didn’t use it in context to show me how the word should be used, but it did for addicted.
Hubby looked it up on Google Fight. I was happy to see that addictive won over addicting but still… when did this lame word come into play at all? If it was to become a word what context would it correctly be used in? As a verb for becoming addicted?
my 2 cents says
Oh, addicting isn’t a word? Oops. I am one of those annoying types that murder the English language. There was a time when I actually thought “fastly” was a word. As in, you’re going too “fastly”, slow down. Honestly, I did. And I have been known to make up a word or two of my own from time to time. My bad.
