Anita wrote a review of this book, Julie & Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes, 1 tiny apartment kitchen on her book blog. Now I really want to read it. You can read an excerpt of it on Amazon, it seems like just the kind of book I would really enjoy. A nice relief from the book I’m reading now which is really good but it’s pretty heavy. He has a writing style that uses some big words that I don’t understand – other words would do just fine but I think he’s a bit of an intellectual type, the kind that has an extended vocabulary and uses it instead of his normal one.
I can’t justify buying this book right now though because it is really expensive for a book – for a light entertaining book. It’s nearly AU$40. Normally I would pay $20 for a new book or less than $10 for a second hand one. I might pop into the second hand place and see if they have it. I’ll admit that I haven’t shopped around for the best price but if A&R has it at that price I can’t imagine it getting down to $20 anywhere.
Julie and Julie, the title and the excerpt quite reminds me of Like Water for Chocolate : A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies. It is such a beautiful book about a girl trying to find herself while being oppressed by her strict mother. She falls in love with a boy who is forced to marry her sister and they all live in the same house! The way they interact makes you tingle with the same excitement that one does when confronted by such strong attraction and the brush of hand against skin in passing. Each “chapter” starts with a recipe which then flows into the story of the goings on in the house. I really enjoyed it! Perhaps I will read it again, perhaps if I can’t find a less expensive Julie and Julia I will read Like Water for Chocolate.

Thanks so much for your help. I’ll try and take care of those things first thing tomorrow…ok…at least by sometime tomorrow night. 🙂 Thanks again.

I’m sympathetic. Books are so ridiculously expensive!! Hopefully the price will come down soon, or they’ll issue it in paperback. The good news it isn’t going anywhere!
If you lived closer, I’d send along my copy!!
