I have raved about Inkscape and GIMP before, I think they’re great graphics programs. Expensive programs might be better but for saving $300 or however much they cost, these programs are excellent.
Switching to the Mac versions wasn’t entirely satisfactory. They run under X11, which doesn’t use the apple key and has a click-to-focus action on it’s windows, so if I’m on my image window in the GIMP and I want to use a tool I have to click on the tool window and then the tool. I founf it confusing and annoying. Easily fixed though! Just enter defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm true into Terminal or xterm.
I haven’t got this fix for the apple key working yet though 🙁
