Sage

For the record, I’m such an idiot! This is the third time I’m writing this post. I keep loading something else into this tab instead of a new one.

Anyway, as I’ve said previously on this blog, and another couple of time in this one post that got deleted, I used to use Bloglines. He was a nice enough guy but we didn’t get long very well. He insisted that I read whole feeds at a time where as I wanted to read the post by post. So that was then end of that relationship.

I then found Google Reader. That was pretty exciting because Google brings forth really innovative and cool stuff B). The Reader is still in early days and she doesn’t tell you which feeds are updated, there’s a “reading list” that is chronological and a feeds list but it doesn’t say which are updated. The whole thing uses javascript (I think) to run, so it’s a bit slow, sometimes impossibly slow at work where the network is atrocious.

Now *dum da da dah da daaaah* is Sage. Sage is a fantastic plugin for FireFox. It can export and import as opml files (so it’s compatible with other readers and your subscription list). It uses a folder in bookmarks so you can even export that as html or easily find a blog you want, you can also easily sort your feeds into folders if you want. It uses a sidebar in the FireFox window that shows you your subscriptions and when you click on one it shows you all the unread posts in a box below that, which you can click on and it will bring the page up – the actual page not just the post, so you still see people’s pretty web design. Alternatively you can just look in the main window which has the posts in boxes of their own. Sage is just what I wanted :nerd:.

The only down side is that it’s attached to my bookmarks on my computer, it’s not web-based. So if I’m at work or uni I’ll have to just look up sites to read them rather than using Sage. Which is fine, I’m not that lazy, it’s just that Sage won’t know which ones I’ve read. That problem could be solved by carrying around a portable application but it wouldn’t be compatible with the macs at work, only at uni.
