Californians, help! What’s the go with sales taxes and levies in California? Are they included in the price you see on the shelf?
It might sound like a silly question, but you see Australia has a 10% GST, which is on most non-essential items and a few essential ones too. Sometimes the sales receipt tells you whether GST was charged, but it is always included on the price on the shelf. You never think you’re buying something for $20 and find out at the counter it’s $22.
I seem to remember hearing that it wasn’t the same everywhere. I’ll need to add about 10% to all prices to convert to AU$, do I need to add 8% in my head for tax too?
In San Francisco, it’s 8.5% sales tax. And, no, the tax is not included in the price you see on the shelf. Sorry!
Thanks AY! You rock… especially responding to my broken post. I didn’t close a title attribute and only the first two and a half sentences were there!
Bummer that it’s not included on the shelf price, but at least I know that now. 🙂
